The Training Program

To make a difference in the education system that involves our youngest children, our teachers first have to be knowledgeable. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality of training possible. For that reason, we have several volunteers working to develop a sustainable training program that will instruct our teachers on the most developmentally appropriate early childhood teaching methods.

Currently, all of our teachers who work directly with early childhood students in our supported schools are undergoing this training program.

We are striving for our teachers to have an understanding of the following:

  • Developmentally appropriate practice, which includes:

    • Knowing what is typical at each age and stage of development.

    • Knowing what is individually appropriate for each child in our classroom.

    • Knowing what is culturally important about our students’ backgrounds and families.

  • The most up to date, research based teaching methods, which includes knowledge of:

    • Shared control. This means including lots of child-initiation and choice in the classroom. When children are allowed to make their own choices, they are gaining independence and positive self-esteem, which are skills that will be required for the rest of their lives.

    • The environment. This means understanding how to effectively set up a classroom that is conducive to all learning styles.

    • Daily routines. This means understanding how to plan for and use a consistent daily schedule and comprehensive curriculum, which includes all components of necessary learning.

  • Appropriate discipline and classroom management techniques.

  • How and why to efficiently track a child’s educational growth.
